Pregnancy: Exercising during the Second Trimester

by alisia

The second trimester of pregnancy is definitely the best trimester. The morning sickness goes away and you finally start feeling better. You start to look pregnant and don't have to worry about people thinking you are just thickening up. You get to find out the gender of your baby. You aren't too big and uncomfortable yet. I love the second trimester.

My Balance

by rachel w.

Me doing nothing.
I've decided that balance is a feeling. I used to run around like a chicken with my head cut off. Darting here, darting there.

I still do that some, but I've slowed down a lot. For me, slowing down helps me maintain balance. Slowing down helps me have that feeling.

I don't feel like I get the same rush that I used to when I was busy. And honestly, sometimes I feel less valuable when I take it slow.

But that's okay.

Sometimes I feel like it is a blessing that I am able to move slow. My life feels long. I enjoy lots of moments. I'll spend a whole day doing nothing but playing with my boys. I'll take two hours to grocery shop with my sister. I'll spend a week getting my laundry done.

Right now my life isn't a race.

Right now my balance is realized when I move slower.

Check out our conversation on balance.

Get your Balance with a Bento

by Misa

I love spring for the balance it brings to the world after a long cold winter.  The weather is finally getting nice.  A little chill is still in the air.  I find this time of year so refreshing.

How to Feed Your Family of 4 for $250 a Month

by Andi

A few years ago while my husband and I were in graduate school and living on a tight student budget, we sat down to carefully look at our monthly expenses because we felt like things were quickly spiraling out of control. We were living in Washington D.C., and although it is a notoriously expensive city, we knew we could make changes to make things easier.  As we analyzed where all of our money was going, we realized that a big chunk of it was going towards groceries every month.  We made an ambitious goal to only spend $250 a month on groceries.  It took a little trial and error and practice, but I'm proud to say that we found a way to make it happen every single month.  And guess what?  We didn't starve. We didn't feel like we were going without.  Yes, we had to be careful about what we bought, but once we got used to it, it really wasn't that hard.

I was talking with some of my girlfriends a few weeks ago about groceries and one of the girls asked the group to share how much we spend a month.  When I told everyone that we've managed to keep our budget to $250 a month even since adding two children to our family, they were surprised and asked me to share some of my tips and tricks with them.  Since this month's theme is all about balance, I thought I would share how I balance my budget with you!

Easy DIY Dust Jackets

by cat

Storage and design working together? Yes please! Yesterday I shared a few ideas on how to achieve streamlined and styled bookshelves. To go along with that post, I'm showing you one of my go-to ways to tackled that project... I heart monochromatic dust jackets.

So friends, here is the easiest do-it-yourself way to streamline the look of your books with book covers.

Six Steps to Styled Shelves

by cat

There's nothing quite like the visual balance of a well styled bookshelf, don't you think? Especially when it's the upper shelves that are out of my kiddies' reach and therefore actually stay intact. I've resigned the lowest shelves as a home upon which the blankets multiply. :)

But those top levels are where the fun happens. Books, art, photos, mementos, they all come together and harmoniously turn storage into a display of design. Good times, right?!

As you work on organizing your shelves, here are a few tips to consider:
  1. Decorate with books, both vertically and in a horizontal stack.
  2. Use interesting objects as bookends for the vertical books and you can get creative with a topper for the horizontal book stack.
  3. Add some green! Even if it's fake plants like mine, it really freshens up the overall look.
  4. Make it personal with art or photos that you love.
  5. Think about color or the lack of color. We all like different tones and some like a variety of color. I gravitate toward lots of white and neutrals and with some punches of color. Try to create a theme that is consistent throughout the style of your shelves.
  6. Keep it as minimal as you can. It's tempting if you have tons of books or souvenirs to cram them all on at once. Just keep in mind that the overall design could be overwhelming visually if there's too much going on. Consider removing that last nick-knack.

Get creative and have fun styling away!

Be sure to check out Thursday's post, I'll be sharing an easy DIY on making your books look oh so impressive.

BALANCE: the act, the journey... the myth?

by rachel w.

Today, we are going to try something a little different as we kick off this month's theme on balance.

Last month, when we revealed our theme on acceptance, all of our regular contributors weighed in on the topic. This month, to balance things out ;), we'd love to hear from you! I'm testing out a facebook plug-in that will let you post here from your facebook profile, and allow us all the opportunity to have a conversation on the ever evolving topic of balance. So, come be a guinea pig (or guinea doe), and give it a try. If you don't have facebook, just comment using the regular method.

Let's get started with my thoughts on balance...

A few months ago, I would have thought that balance was possible. Then I started this blog, and my life was WAY out of balance. And I felt bad about that. Thankfully, I have come up with some ways to rebalance, but in doing so, I have started to wonder if balance is even a thing. Can one's life be perfectly divided and balanced into nice little buckets? And isn't there a balance within each of those buckets (for example in self there could be body, mind and spirit, and within mind there could be art and science and on and on...)? And what about the fact that during different parts of our life we have different responsibilities and goals? For example, I am a mother of two small boys, does that even allow for balance? Is it our role as mothers to give everything to our children? Can that make them balanced? I could go on...

Balancing on the Brink
Where I am now, I'm thinking that maybe balance can be achieved over a lifetime of acts in different arenas--if balance is your goal. But, maybe balance can't be measured by acts, but by a feeling of contentment. So, maybe moments of balance do exist in the here and now. Maybe these moments should be strived for, but maybe we should realize that these moments of balance are like beautiful vistas, which are enjoyed after a sweaty journey over rocky terrain. As I wonder if I should strive for balance, I think about burnout--a result of imbalance, which maybe occurs because we are not feeding all parts of ourself. We can't be sustained only physically, or mentally or socially or spiritually or whathaveyoually. Anyway, as you can tell, my jury is still out on balance... Maybe you can sway me one way or another.

So here are my questions to you...

  • Does balance even exist?
  • Should we strive for balance?
  • How do we balance it all?
  • Why do we want to balance it all?
  • What do you do to rebalance?
  • Do you have a favorite quote on balance?
